Log leaders Oranjemund Rugby Club take on the defending champions Ocean Swallows in Lüderitz on Saturday.

Oranjemund is placed at the top of the log with 10 points, having played three matches. They recorded two wins, collected two bonus points and suffered one loss. The boys from the Diamond Town scored nine tries and conceded 10 tries in the matches they played so far. Keetmanshoop's RAMS are in second position, having collected six points from three games. They recorded two wins, collected one bonus point and suffered one loss. The RAMS scored eight tries and conceded six tries. They incurred a three-point deduction from the Namibian Rugby Union (NRU) for using an unauthorised player in their match against Oranjemund. Defending champions, Ocean Swallows, are placed at the bottom of the log with two points after two games. Swallows are still in search of their first win. They pocketed two bonus points, scored five tries and conceded six tries.

Oranjemund Rugby Club coach Hugren Andrews said that the Oranjemund / Rosh Pinah Road closure poses a problem for the team that has to travel to Lüderitz. “Public transporters have issues due to the alternative road being closed at 15:00 every day. We will have to use the Debmarine mine road.” He added that practice sessions went well this week. “We have two injuries in the team. Hooker Nangula Natangwe is still injured and will be out for the rest of the season. Fullback Allister September is also not available, and a couple of players (six) cannot travel due to work commitments. However, we have depth in the team and will travel with a very capable squad.”

'Guns blazing' - Andrews said that they expect a tough game. “We are playing on Swallows' home ground. They are the defending champions and have a point to prove. I expect that they will come out with guns blazing. They can bring it on. We will stick to our game plan and play according to the structure settings we practised.” Andrews said his charges will not sit back and allow Swallows to dictate matters on the field of play. “We are the log leaders and will come at them with a bang. The players know the goal of the club and should stay focused on achieving what we set ourselves out to do.”

Bring it on - Ocean Swallows coach, Alwin “Tiekie” van Wyk, said he will have to make do with the players at his disposal. “I do not have a fly-half and flankers. We also have a problem with the lock position and do not have any reserves. I hope the team will pull through.” Van Wyk added that he would improvise. “I am planning to use a wing and a centre to fill some of the positions where there is a need. Practice was good this week. We are grateful for WESCO for fixing the rugby posts for us. We paid and were allowed to use the stadium.” He admitted that the rivalry between the two sides is old. “They will come at us with a vengeance, but we are up for the challenge. It is going to be a do-or-die clash. We need to win this one by scoring seven tries and with a 32-15 margin to keep our hopes alive of defending our title. We know what to do. It is going to be hard work, but it is not impossible.
