Community members welcomed the opening of the refurbished Primary Health Care (PHC) Clinic in Lüderitz on Tuesday. The entire floor of the facility was completely re-tiled. The walls received a fresh coat of paint and a second (exit) door was also installed. “Our clinic was in a bad state. We could not render quality care. The walls were tarnished with the paint peeling off and the floor was damaged. We didn't even have an exit door and proper ventilation also lacked.” said Registered Nurse Nathasa Simon, the head of the PHC Clinic in Lüderitz. Now when you enter, it feels like entering a private healthcare facility.” She implored the community and staff members to preserve the infrastructure. “Please refrain from any form of vandalism and take pride in keeping the clinic clean and well maintained so it remains up to standard.”

United we stand

Regional Constituency Councillor Susan Ndjaleka hailed the project as a true reflection of collaboration between stakeholders who she said had the real interest of the community at heart. “We are thankful for every one that contributed. Bourbon is a company who is supplying the oil and gas industry. We knocked on many doors and they said yes we have N$200 000 available for the project and purchased the material. The Ministry of Health and Social Services transported the material for us and the Correctional Service came on board and provided the labour. Community members donated plants and curtains while the employees of the hospital participated actively in the renovation process.” Representing Bourbon, Eoné Besser said the company was truly happy to have played a role in making the project a reality. “May this clinic continue to make a difference in the lives of many. Congratulations to every one.”

More services coming

Ndjaleka also announced that residents can look forward to a Mental Health Service being introduced in the //Karas region. She further explained that the role of each Regional Council office is to work and collaborate with government, ministries and agencies. “We have done so for the Home Affairs and now this project. This initiative started through the council in 2022. We were also here in 2021 and with the support of the Rotary Club upgraded the former COVID isolation centre into a TB ward.”

New appointment

Ndjaleka also introduced Justine Mukongo, who was appointed as a customer care officer at Lüderitz Hospital, to the community. “We want her to address the long queues we see and she must also look into the shortage of medicine. These issues must be addressed and we therefore need suggestions on how we can bring solutions to that,” she emphasised. Dr Evans Sanga the Acting Chief Medical Officer for the //Kharas Region said that the renovations were more than just structural changes. “This is a real milestone. It represents our unwavering dedication to ensuring that every individual in the community receives the highest quality of care. This partnership reflects a shared vision of health and wellness, with the synergy between the private sector and public health creating transformative impacts.”
