The former mayor of Lüderitz, Phillipus Balhao, teased on 24 September via Facebook that he is looking into establishing a ratepayers association for residents of the harbour town.

“Would you be ready to heed the call when the time comes?” Balhao posted, accompanied by a logo containing a lighthouse and the slogan “By Us, For Us, With Us”, on his social media page. Balhao announced his resignation on Facebook on 23 September. “I resign as mayor and as a member of the Independent Patriots for Change. It has been an honour serving you all. Thank you for your trust, collaboration and support. Your dedication to our town has inspired me every day, and I am grateful for the memories, lessons, and progress we’ve shared,” he wrote. Balhao said he remains optimistic about Lüderitz’s future and will continue working for the community through other initiatives and opportunities. “I decided to call it a day. I am considering my options and am looking forward to starting a new chapter. To those who’ve stood beside me, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have carried me through some testing times,” he said.

Following his resignation from both the IPC and his mayoral position, the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) gave the assurance to its Lüderitz branch members that the party remains anchored in the core values of integrity, transparency, accountability, unity and service to the people. In a statement released on 24 September, IPC called upon all its members and patriots to remain focused, united and guided by the principles of integrity, accountability and service. “The IPC will continue to uphold these values without fear or favour of any individual. Our focus remains on building strong structures, strengthening community trust, and preparing diligently for the tasks that lie ahead. As members of the IPC engage in the process of selecting the next generation of delegated representatives, we remain steadfast in our commitment to protect, defend and uphold the democratic principles of grassroots participatory democracy,” said IPC spokesperson Imms Nashinge.
