Nampower has issued a notice of a planned power outage for the Lüderitz area.
Pieter Cloete, Nampower’s area manager for the south, explained in a communication dated 6 October that the outage is scheduled for Sunday, 19 October, from 07:00 to 19:00. The work will allow Claydon personnel to install a safety net over the 66kV live line crossings associated with the new Diaz project. “The outage will affect Lüderitz town, Ombepo Wind Farm, Koichab – Pan 22kV reticulation, NamWater, MTC Shell, NAC, Namdeb, and Kolmaskop 11kV reticulation,” Cloete said.
Customers wishing to carry out work on their installations or reticulation during the outage are advised to submit a formal application. “Nampower will then arrange for the necessary safety and earthing devices to be applied. Working permits must be obtained before any work commences,” he added. He also cautioned: “The power supply must at all times be treated as live, as we may re-energise without prior notification,” and apologised for any inconvenience that may result from the outage.
Installing a safety net over a live 66kV line is a hazardous task requiring specialised dielectric nets, trained personnel, remote installation methods, and strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent electrical contact and mechanical injury. Dielectric nets are non-conductive safety barriers made from insulating materials that prevent dropped high-voltage conductors from contacting energised equipment or other structures.
