The Namibian Heritage Week 2025 invites citizens to celebrate the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage. This year’s theme, chosen in Subiya, is “Bahindi Belambi lye Chizo Chetu”, which translates to “Torchbearers of Our Heritage”. The theme emphasizes the responsibility to preserve and pass on Namibia’s cultural and natural legacy.

The Heritage Week will take place from 15 to 21 September and will feature events across the country. The official opening of the week will be held on Monday in Lüderitz. Throughout the week, institutions such as the Museum of Namibian Fashion, the Bwabwata Living Museums, and the National Archives of Namibia will host various events. Full details of all activities will be shared through the official channels of the Namibian Heritage Week. In addition to attending events, citizens can celebrate the country’s heritage by wearing traditional attire or preparing traditional dishes. The event is organized by a committee comprising over 40 institutions, including museums, cultural associations, and international partners such as UNESCO.

Namibian Heritage Week focuses on traditions, places, objects, and customs, as well as historical and cultural elements of collective significance. It originated from an initiative by the National Museum of Namibia, which initially planned a single Museum Day. With the support of the Museums Association of Namibia and other partners, including the National Heritage Council, it has grown into a nationwide event spanning all 14 regions and celebrating both the country’s cultural and natural treasures.

The week aims to foster appreciation of cultural diversity, ensure the transmission of traditions, protect all forms of heritage, recognize the contributions of all communities, promote intercultural understanding, support indigenous communities, and build a network dedicated to the preservation of cultural resources.
